Iowa Carbon Pipelines

About This Project

This map helps users locate Iowa counties impacted by planned carbon pipeline construction, ordinances, and litigation. Basic instructions are as follows:

1.) In the upper right corner, use the layer control to switch to the layer showing which counties have enacted pipeline-related ordinances or litigation, or have news reported about pipeline proposals.
2.) You can also use this to filter the planned pipelines by company (Navigator, Summit, and Wolf).
3.) With the ordinance layer on, you can click counties with ordinances on the map to open ordinance-related documents in new web browser tabs. When more than one ordinance exists, you may need to set your browser preferences to allow popups for this page.
4.) You can also search for county ordinances or litigation using the dropdown menu in the sidebar. This will return a list at the bottom.
5.) You can collapse this sidebar by clicking the arrow icon in its upper right corner.

Research for this project was conducting by staff and research assistants of the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative at the University of Iowa College of law. This application was developed by the University of Iowa Libraries' Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio. The locations of the planned pipelines were digitized by researchers at the FracTracker Alliance and appear here courtesy of Dr. Ted Auch, the Midwest Program Director of the FracTracker Alliance.
